RAIN (Remote Access Integrated Network) Module

The Remote Access Integrated Network (RAIN) Module is the core of a stand-alone communications and data logging system that improves the management of any system.  The RAIN Module supports many industry standard protocols, including CAN, Ethernet, RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485. 

 

It has a built in modem, which allows data to be uploaded the TMV’s Remote Health Monitoring server, an internal 8GB SD card, and a USB expansion slot for removable flash drives.

The RAIN system includes the RAIN Module, a wiring harness for serial links, a wiring harness for power, and a cellular/WiFi/GPS antenna.  The software is customized for each project based on customer requirements.

The RAIN module is available in either panel-mount (shown above) or rack-mount variants. The rack-mount variant is a 3-MCU LRU device conforming to AAR S-9101.

Product Details

The RAIN Module supports communication using the following protocols:

  • RS485 (2 ports in harness)

  • RS422 (1 port in harness)

  • RS232 (2 ports in harness)

  • CAN (2 ports in harness)

  • Ethernet (4 separate ports)

The front face plate of the RAIN Module bears several connectors and LEDs.  Their purposes are as follows:

SERIAL (J1)

This port is intended for the RAIN harness which connects the module to various systems it will communicate with.  The port requires a 26 pin, circular MIL Spec size 16 socket (female) connector.  A custom harness is included with the system.  See Wiring List for your project for more details on pin placement.

ETHERNET 1

This is a Gigabit Ethernet port which requires an 8 pin, A-coded M12 connector.

This is a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port which requires an 8 pin, A-coded M12 connector.

USB FAULT

This LED indicates a fault with the attached flash drive.  Replace the drive.

WiFi

This port is intended for an optional 50 Ohm WiFi antenna and requires a reverse polarity TNC connector.

CELL 1

This port is intended for the Primary Cell Antenna that is included with the RAIN system.  It requires a TNC connector.

CELL 2

This port is intended for a Diversity Antenna and requires a TNC connector.

GPS

This port is intended for an optional 50 Ohm GPS antenna and requires a TNC connector.

UBS

This port is intended for a removable USB flash drive.  It has an output limit 0.5 Amps.  Intended for FAT or VFAT filesystems.

ETHERNET 2

This is a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port which requires an 8 pin, A-coded M12 connector.

ETHERNET 4

This is a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port which requires an 8 pin, A-coded M12 connector.

CPU OK

This LED indicates that the CPU is functioning correctly.

POWER

When illuminated, it indicates the power supply is functioning correctly.

USB DONE

This LED indicates the system has completed downloading all logs to the flash drive.

USB BUSY

This LED indicates data is being written or read from external memory.  Do NOT remove the flash drive while this LED is on.

PWR (J2)

This port supplies power to the module.  Pin B is +74V, Pin E is Ground, and Pin D is Shield.

The RAIN Module software collects data through the various ports and stores it in log files formatted to work with TMV’s TECU-PC software.  


When a USB flash drive is inserted into the USB port, all data logs available are downloaded onto the drive.  
When WiFi or Cellular access to the Internet is available, data logs can be uploaded to TMV’s Remote Health Monitoring server for remote viewing. 

 

Additionally, heart beat packets and alerts can be sent triggering email alerts when on critical faults occur.

TECU System Add-On

The RHM service can be added onto TMV’s TECU system.

A modem and antennae are added to the TECU system, allowing the CPU Module to communicate with TMV’s servers.  

 

All information is made available in the cloud for review from any location. 

Remotely connect to the TECU system to perform fault log downloads, event-recorder downloads (when feature is included), and real-time captures.
